Food of the Month: January

Welcome to the very first installment of the Food of the Month Club!

To start things off, I thought it only fitting to feature the food that inspired it all...Tomatoes!

It was 5 o'clock in the morning on the kiddies last day of school before Christmas vacation.  I was cooking a very large pot full of about 4 kilos of tomatoes to make Tomato Salsa for Ashley's class party.  While I waited for the tomatoes to finish cooking, I started to think about some of my favorite tomato based recipes like Cream of Tomato Soup and Entomatadas.  Then I thought about other tomato recipes that I wanted to try, like Tomato Soup Cake.  Then I began to wonder how fun it would be to get together with a few of my foodie friends to share some of our favorite ways to cook and eat one specific food each month.  And the idea for the Food of the Month Club was born!

Any kind of tomato will do.  Grape and/or cherry tomatoes, Heirlooms, Romas, even tomatoes as large as grapefruits.

Cherry Tomatoes

You have until January 28th to post your tomato recipes on your blog and email me your entries.  For more details read the main page for the Food of the Month Club.

I will see you all back here on January 31st with the Food of the Month Club: Tomato Round-Up.

  1. what a good choice to start off this series, I do love doing so many things with tomatoes, we use them in so many Creole dishes and I make all kinds of salsas too - now, if I can find time, I will post one and do the email thingy... or can I use a past post of a tomato recipe?

  2. I have a question...are canned or jarred tomatoes okay?  Finding decent fresh tomatoes in the Midwest during January is not an easy feat!  Let me know.  If not, I'll have to get crafty ;P  Can't wait to play along!

  3. Fun!  Leslie, I can always count on you to be festive for no reason at all.  And, what, if not festive, is a "food of the month" club!

I am sure I can come up with a tomato based recipe!  I will make sure I join in the fun this month!

    You are just so clever!

  4. Canned and/or jarred tomatoes will work fine too!  I know tomatoes aren't really in season in January, but I really thought they should be the first featured food for the series.  :)

  5. Drick, if you're unable to post a new tomato based recipe, I'll make an exception for you.  Especially since that tomato pie of yours should definitely be shared with the world! :)

  7. Coolio, thanks chica.  Maybe I can find some nice greenhouse grown ones at the market...or maybe I'll use sundried.  If all else fails, it's just nice to know that I can use canned/jarred if need be. Thanks! =)
